HISTORIA - GARY LOW

GARY LOW, ídolo de la música disco de los 80, vuelve a actuar en Italia. El intérprete de 'La colegiala' reaparece tras varias décadas de silencio. En esta foto podemos observarlo con su hija AMAPOLA en ROMA.

El negocio musical hace omnipresentes a unos pocos elegidos y, en algún caso, se deshace de ellos de forma fulminante. No son pocos los nostálgicos de la música disco italiana de los 80 que se han preguntado: ¿Qué fue de Gary Low? ¿Era italiano o era cierto que se trataba de un niño pijo de Sarrià? La indiscreción de internet permite contactar con el tipo que vendió 45 millones de discos al son de La colegiala, You're a danger y I want you. Por teléfono confirma que sigue vivo. "Mi nombre real es Luis Romano Peris Belmonte, no Luis Romero Pérez, como se ha escrito", aclara. Nació en Roma (de ahí lo de Romano) hace 54 años y hoy reside a 35 kilómetros de la capital italiana. Nunca vivió en Terrassa, pero pasó épocas en Sarrià, donde sus padres tenían una casa. Es abuelo, padre de dos hijas y vive con la mujer con la que se casó hace 30 años.
Después de muchos años de retiro, su amigo Gazebo (el cantante de I like Chopin) le ha animado a volver, aprovechando el revival de la música de los 80 que vive Italia. Y ahora no es raro verlo en televisión o actuando los fines de semana.

"TAN CONOCIDO COMO JACKSON"
Gary Low reconoce que el éxito de los 80 lo situó "en un paraíso psicológico". "Era tan conocido como Michael Jackson", recuerda, pero firmó contratos que pronto deseó no haber firmado. El dinero llegaba a través de las galas y los patrocinios pero el dinero de los derechos de autor por las ventas de discos se perdían por el camino. "Tenía discos de platino en Japón y en México, pero nunca cobré nada. Lo descubrí al llegar a Japón y ver en el despacho de un ejecutivo discográfico un disco de platino a mi nombre", explica.

"Discográficas, empresarios, productores... Todos pensaban en cómo quitarme el dinero", denuncia. Por eso estudió Derecho y llevó a juicio a Get Records para recuperar los 3,5 millones de liras que le había estafado. El juez le prohibió cantar durante el proceso, así que tuvo que buscarse otro trabajo. Ganó él, pero no cobró porque la discográfica quebró. También se queja de Hispavox, su sello en España. "Desde que me retiré no he visto ningún royalty".

"Todo eso me afectó la salud. En 1990 me operé de un tumor en el pecho. Culpé de ello a la amargura que creció en mí y que me causó una depresión y una úlcera de estómago. Al despertar de la operación, solo mi mujer y mi madre estaban junto a la cama. Eso te hace ver la realidad". Dejó la música y montó una cadena de gimnasios. "Nunca tuve miedo de trabajar pero dejar la música fue como dejar de respirar".

Su historia es la norma del italo-disco. "Hablo mucho con Gazebo, Sabrina, Den Harrow... y todos fueron engañados. Harrow ganó el equivalente a 1.000 euros por todos los discos que vendió", explica.

Su negocio es el gimnasio, pero sus clientes ya cotillean sobre su identidad. "Algunos saben quién soy y me buscan en Youtube, pero espero que vengan por la calidad de las instalaciones y no porque sea Gary Low". Le encantaría volver a España, así que se promociona con franqueza: "Estoy como un chico de 20 años porque entreno cada día. Tengo todo el pelo y de cara tengo la suerte de ser guapote como antes".
